The Rooms

There is a Rome that no longer exists — a port with no boats left, a household with no duchess, a river trade with no fishermen working it. Four rooms, named for four pieces of it.

In 1642, a Roman duchess named Camilla built a refuge for the women of her household — one small act in a Trastevere that's long since disappeared. This room keeps her name, not her walls.

Behind these walls stands the Basilica of Santa Cecilia — patron saint of music, martyred for a faith she wouldn't renounce. Rome moved on centuries ago. She never quite left.

In 1425, a noblewoman named Francesca Ponziani opened her family's house to the sick and the poor, a few steps from here. The hospital is still standing. The Rome around it isn't.

Before the embankment walls went up in 1888, this stretch of riverbank was Rome's working port — and the fiumaroli were its people: fishermen, boatmen, swimmers who lived off the Tiber. The port is gone. The name stayed.
